1. Karate wa rei ni hajimari rei ni owaru koto o wasureru na.
Karate begins and ends with courtesy.
2. Karate ne sente nashi.
There is no first attack in karate.
3. Karate wa gi no tasuke.
Karate is an aid to justice.
4. Mazu jiko o shire shikoshite hoka o shire.
First control yourself before attempting to control others.
5. Gijutsu yori shinjutsu.
Spirit first, technique second.
6. Kokoro wa hanatan koto o yoso.
Always be ready to release your mind.
7. Wazawai wa ketai ni shozu.
Accident arise from neglect.
8. Dojo nami no karate to omou na.
Do not think karate training is only in the dojo.
9. Karate no shugyo wa issho dearu.
It will take your entire life to learn karate; there is no limit.
10 Arayuru mono o karateka se soko ni myomi ari.
Put your everyday living into karate and you will find Myo (The subtle secrets!).
11. Karate wa yu no gotoku taezu netsu o ataezareba moto no mizi ni kaeru.
Karate is like boiling water. If you do not heat it constantly, it will cool.
12. Katsu kangae wa motso na makenu kangaecwa hitsuyo.
Do not think that you have to win, think rather that you do not have to lose.
13. Teki ni yotte tenka seyo.
Victory depends on your ability to distinguish vulnerable points from invulnerable ones.
14. Ikusa wa kyojitsu no soju ikan ni ari.
The battle is according to how you move guarded and unguarded (move according to you opponent!).
15. Hito no teashi o ken to omoe.
Think of your hand and feet as swords.
16. Dansh mon o izureba hyakuman no teki ari.
When you leave home, think that you have numerous opponents waiting for you. It is your behaviour that invites trouble from them.
17. Kamae wa shoshinsha ni, ato wa shizentai.
Beginners must master low stance and posture; natural body positions are for the advanced.
18. Kata wa tadashiku, jissen wa betsumoso.
Practising a Kata is one thing, engaging in a real fight is another.
19. Chikara no kyojaku, karada no shinshuku, waza no kankyo o wasureru na.
Do not forget to correctly apply: strength and weakness of power, stretching and contraction of the body and slowness and speed of techniques.
20. Tsune ni shinenkofu seyo.
Always think and devise to live the precept every day.
